Even Anime Made the List: 5 Criminally Underrated Fantasy Series That Were Canceled Too Soon

Stills from the series 'My Lady Jane' (2024) and 'The Dragon Prince' (2018–2024)

They would never have been the next Game of Thrones, but they certainly deserved more attention.

Fantasy is a genre that can be epic, touching, and captivating all at once. Unfortunately, not all deserving projects receive the recognition they merit. ScreenRant compiled a list of five fantasy series that, despite their potential, never became mainstream hits. And yes, one of them is even an anime!

Warrior Nun (2020–2022)

Why was it almost a masterpiece?

Netflix brought us the story of a young woman who becomes part of an ancient order fighting demons. A mix of action, mysticism, and drama, Warrior Nun received high praise from critics (84% on Rotten Tomatoes) and adoration from fans (97% audience rating). Despite this, the series was canceled after its second season.

What went wrong?

A long break between seasons and weak marketing efforts worked against the project. A shame, considering Warrior Nun had immense potential to become a cult fantasy favorite.

My Lady Jane (2024)

Why was it almost a masterpiece?

This historical fantasy series from Amazon is witty, romantic, and full of unexpected twists. Even George R.R. Martin praised its originality. The story is inspired by real events but infused with magic, conspiracies, and, of course, romance.

What went wrong?

Poor marketing and a lack of time to build an audience led to its cancellation after just one season. The series never had the chance to fully develop its potential, leaving fans with unresolved storylines.

The Dragon Prince (2018–2024)

Why was it almost a masterpiece?

This seven-season animated series from Netflix tells a story of friendship, magic, and war between humans and elves. Created by one of the writers of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, it remained overshadowed by more popular animated projects.

What went wrong?

Possibly due to its younger target audience or the weaker marketing of its later seasons. But if you love Avatar: The Last Airbender, this series is a must-watch.

The Shannara Chronicles (2016–2017)

Why was it almost a masterpiece?

Based on Terry Brooks’ books, this series transports viewers to a world where magic and technology coexist. Epic landscapes, dramatic storylines, and vibrant characters could have made it a Game of Thrones alternative.

What went wrong?

A poor choice of networks (MTV and Spike TV), deviations from the source material, and criticism of the script led to its cancellation after two seasons. And yet, The Shannara Chronicles premiered at the perfect time—when fantasy was at its peak.

Kaos (2024)

Why was it almost a masterpiece?

Netflix offered a modern take on Greek mythology, featuring Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. Witty, dark, and occasionally absurd, the series had all the makings of a hit. Yet, it was canceled after just one season.

What went wrong?

Weak marketing and insufficient time to build an audience. The finale of Kaos left many intriguing questions unanswered, which will likely remain unresolved.

These series deserved more recognition than they received. Each of them offers a unique story that could have become a genre classic. If you're looking for something fresh and unconventional, give this list a chance — sometimes, the brightest gems are hidden in the shadows.
