Perhaps the Academy should consider hiring someone to keep track of all the notable industry deaths throughout the year. The most glaring omission from last night’s ceremony has to be Alain Delon, who passed away last August. He was a cultural icon in Europe, on par with the likes of James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Paul Newman.
For some inexplicable reason, Delon was left out. How does that even happen? He became a legend with his impressive run of films in the 1960s, particularly in classics like Rocco and His Brothers, L’Eclisse, The Leopard, La Piscine, Le Cercle Rouge, and, of course, Le Samouraï. What a remarkable career!
Unlike Jeffrey Wells, I don't believe Delon’s omission was related to his right-wing politics; this seems more like sheer negligence on the Academy’s part. Other notable figures who were forgotten included Jim Abrams, Tony Todd, Shannen Doherty, Michelle Trachtenberg, George Armitage, Morgan Spurlock, Olivia Hussey, and Tony Roberts.
