Meryl Streep may be making a roaring return to the big screen — quite literally. According to Nexus Point News, the iconic actress is in talks to voice Aslan, reimagined as a female character, in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, part of Netflix’s ambitious revival of The Chronicles of Narnia.
In C.S. Lewis’ beloved novels, Aslan is the wise, powerful lion who acts as both protector and spiritual guide within the world of Narnia. Now, with Gerwig at the helm, this symbolic figure is being reinterpreted through a fresh — and surprising — lens.
If cast, The Devil Wears Prada star would return to film for the first time since 2021’s Don’t Look Up, in which she had a supporting role. More recently, Streep has been active in television, most notably in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. She is also rumored to portray singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in Cameron Crowe’s much-anticipated biopic, though that project hasn’t seen updates since late last year.

Gerwig, who made headlines with the massive success of Barbie, signed a two-film deal with Netflix to bring the world of Narnia to life. All signs point to her starting with The Magician’s Nephew, which chronologically serves as a prequel to the better-known stories in the series. But Netflix’s vision goes well beyond just two films — Bloomberg recently reported that the streamer aims to produce up to eight movies based on Lewis’ books, with or without Gerwig’s continued involvement.
Streep joins a list of high-profile names linked to the project, including Daniel Craig, Saoirse Ronan and Charli XCX. Production is reportedly slated to begin in late summer, with a theatrical release planned for Thanksgiving Day 2026. A Netflix release would follow in December that same year.
As Gerwig breathes new life into Narnia, fans of both Streep and the original books are watching closely — eager to see how this timeless world transforms with bold casting, modern storytelling, and a lioness at its heart. Be the way, an unexpected role awaits not only Meryl Streep — recently, we reported on the surprising character Daniel Craig may soon take on in the same magical universe.
