Dumbledore Isn’t the Grey Cardinal: Slughorn Could Have Held the Power

Still from the film 'Harry Potter'

Nobody would have thought of this fearful professor.

Horace Slughorn is one of the most cunning characters in the Harry Potter universe, but his role in the magical world is often underestimated. He’s not just the Potions Master and Head of Slytherin House; he is a true mastermind who subtly influenced events at Hogwarts and the life of magical Britain for decades. Don’t believe it? Here’s the evidence.

Slughorn is the Puppet Master

From the start of his career, Horace created the "Slug Club," inviting only the most talented and promising students. But he didn’t do this out of noble intentions — he was building a personal network of useful connections.

When his former students became influential figures — ministers, famous wizards, successful businessmen — they owed him. In return, they did favors for Slughorn, provided rare items, and ensured a comfortable life for him after retirement.

But if a student didn’t interest him, Slughorn could completely ignore them. Unlike him, Albus Dumbledore acted more openly, which made him an enemy of the Ministry.

Master Manipulator

Slughorn was not just a skilled politician but also a brilliant manipulator. He didn’t get involved in direct conflicts but knew how to extract benefit from any situation. When Voldemort began seizing power, he disappeared to avoid participating in a war that contradicted his nature. Although he was from Slytherin, the concepts of honor and good were not alien to him. When Dumbledore asked him to return in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he continued to resist, knowing it would pull him into a dangerous game.

However, his attachment to comfort and fear of the Dark Lord ultimately made him agree. But the most important secret Slughorn kept was that he once told a young Tom Riddle about Horcruxes. This conversation became a pivotal moment in the creation of Voldemort and indirectly influenced the entire magical world, although Horace spent his life trying to forget it.

Slughorn and the Final Battle for Hogwarts

Despite his cowardice, during the Battle of Hogwarts, Slughorn showed unexpected bravery. He defended the students, fought Death Eaters, and even faced Voldemort himself alongside McGonagall and Kingsley. This act became a turning point for Slytherin House’s reputation. After Voldemort’s downfall, the house was no longer seen as a nest of villains, and Slughorn himself began to be regarded as someone who played an important role in the defeat of Voldemort. In other words, in just one battle, he became a hero and solidified his status.

Why Slughorn is the True Puppet Master

  • He built a network of his people in the Ministry and other important magical institutions.
  • He manipulated students, selecting the most promising ones and maintaining warm relationships with them.
  • He avoided direct conflicts but always came out on top.
  • He influenced key events, even though he was never the central figure.
  • He only became part of the war when he realized he couldn’t hide from it.

Slughorn is a master of playing in the shadows, and perhaps his approach saved his life and ultimately helped him play a role in the victory of good.
