Lionsgate has officially confirmed what many suspected — or hoped: Keanu Reeves is set to return for John Wick 5. While no production date has been announced, Chad Stahelski is officially on board to direct — after completing two other commitments: a Highlander reboot and an untitled bank robbery film.
The announcement came during the John Wick Experience event in Las Vegas, where Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate’s Head of Global Products & Experiences, told ComicBook: "We’re developing a fifth John Wick film... [John Wick] may be [dead]. We are all on baited breath waiting to find out." That cautious wording contrasts with Reeves’ own recent quote: "The character is dead. He died." Still, the studio seems willing to offer a generous incentive to bring him back.
Meanwhile, the Wick-verse is growing rapidly. Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, arrives this summer. Donnie Yen will direct and star in Caine, a spin-off modeled after his signature action films. And an animated prequel, directed by Kubo and the Two Strings filmmaker Shannon Tindle, will explore the legendary night Wick killed all his rivals to escape the High Table. Reeves will voice the character.

The numbers justify the expansion. Chapter 4 brought in nearly $500 million worldwide, and in today’s franchise-hungry market, letting a property like this fade is nearly unthinkable. Lionsgate, facing a rough 2024 box office year with flops like The Crow and Borderlands, is betting on Wick to steady the ship.
Industry reports also suggest that Lionsgate is exploring a potential sale, with Bloomberg noting in December that the studio may be seeking buyers. In that light, a revived and expanded John Wick franchise makes the company more attractive — especially with Reeves on board.
So yes, John Wick may be dead. But in Hollywood? That’s just another opportunity for a comeback.
