The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The directorial debut of the daughter of one of the most successful horror directors has been quite successful.
David Cronenberg’s daughter Caitlin’s debut feature Humane, a psychological thriller, is gaining traction on Hulu, currently ranked third. Initially released in April 2024 and later added to Shudder, it received little attention until now. The underrated film is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Humane takes place in an alternate Canada where a euthanasia campaign aims to reduce the population due to the climate crisis. The story follows the York family, brought together by their father Charles, whose surprise leads to a night full of twists and terror.
The script was written by Michael Sparaga, known for directing the documentary United We Fan, which explores letter-writing campaigns to save shows like Star Trek, Quantum Leap, and Arrested Development.
In an interview with MovieWeb, director Cronenberg shared that she was instantly captivated by Sparaga's script.
"I think it was essentially the theme, and just generally what this very original unique idea was. I love this sort of alternate present where you could really imagine that this is going on in the world. And I never read anything like it, and it really appealed to me that within this chaotic world, there is this tight family dynamic, which is something that I really liked to watch."
