Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, offering a glimpse at its updated take on the classic comedy. Set for release on 18 July 2025, the film sees Liam Neeson in the lead role of Frank Drebin — a character originally portrayed by Leslie Nielsen in the 1988 comedy.
The new version is directed by Akiva Schaffer, known for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, with a screenplay by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. All three previously collaborated on Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022).
Although Neeson is best known for action roles, the trailer places him in exaggerated comic scenarios — including one where he foils a bank robbery while disguised in a school uniform. His performance leans into deadpan humour, gently parodying his tough screen persona.
Joining Neeson in the cast are Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser and Danny Huston. Anderson plays Drebin’s romantic interest and recently described Neeson as "a true gentleman." Neeson, in turn, praised her for her comic instincts.
Not everyone has welcomed the reboot. David Zucker, co-creator of the original trilogy, admitted he was surprised the studio handed the project to a new team, and expressed doubts about modern attempts to recapture the tone.
Whether the new Naked Gun will find the same audience remains to be seen, but the trailer suggests a project aware of its legacy — and willing to lean into its own absurdity.
