Despite stiff competition from superhero blockbusters and sci-fi masterpieces, the Western genre continues to captivate global audiences, largely thanks to Taylor Sheridan's work. Starting his career as an actor and later transitioning into screenwriting, Sheridan became one of Hollywood’s most successful figures after releasing the hit series Yellowstone starring Kevin Costner.
Years later, Sheridan has several successful Western series under his belt, many inspired by earlier films in the genre. At the top of his personal list is Clint Eastwood’s iconic film.
Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven Inspired Sheridan’s Creation of Yellowstone and the Entire Franchise
Born and raised in Texas, Sheridan was naturally drawn to the Western genre. In interviews, he revealed that he was initially inspired by filmmakers who worked on Civil War films, later transitioning to Westerns. He watched nearly every Western film but was particularly impacted by Unforgiven — Clint Eastwood’s 1992 classic. The film was an instant hit, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor.

Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves Also Inspired Yellowstone
Coincidentally, Yellowstone’s lead actor also played a significant role in shaping the series’ direction. In 1990, Kevin Costner directed and starred in Dances with Wolves, a historical drama about a U.S. lieutenant exploring Native American life. The film also earned multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. Dances with Wolves is another of Sheridan’s personal favorites, and years later, Costner played the lead role in Yellowstone.
