Sir Christopher Nolan seems to be outdoing himself again. If in Oppenheimer he did without CGI when creating a nuclear explosion, now in The Odyssey he decided to add realism to ancient Greek myths.
What is known about the filming of Odyssey?
As it became known, the location shooting of the film will take place in Nestor's cave — a place shrouded in myths. According to legend, it was here that Hermes hid 50 sheepskins stolen from Apollo. Now in this sacred space there will be a six-meter mechanical cyclops-animatronic, which will be created especially for one of the key scenes of the film.
Most likely, we will talk about Odysseus' attempt to escape from captivity, saving the lives of his comrades along the way.
How was it in the myths?
In the ninth song of Homer's Odyssey, the hero and his companions, returning from the Trojan War, end up on the island of the Cyclopes. Curiosity and a thirst for adventure lead them to the cave of Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. The Cyclops, returning from the pasture, blocks the entrance with a stone and grabs two sailors, devouring them alive. The next day, he kills four more, demonstrating his merciless strength.
Odysseus, realizing that he cannot defeat the giant in an open fight, resorts to cunning. He introduces himself to Polyphemus as "Nobody" and treats him to wine. When the Cyclops gets drunk, the hero blinds him with a sharpened stake heated in a fire. Waking up, Polyphemus calls his relatives in a rage, but they only laugh, hearing: "Nobody killed me!"
As a result, Odysseus leaves the cave, disguised in a flock of sheep. It remains to be seen what Nolan's vision will be. But one thing is clear: he's not afraid to take risks and is once again ready to change the idea of what a blockbuster should be.
