While details about the project remain scarce, it marks another collaboration between Josh O'Connor and an American director, continuing his recent work in the U.S. film scene. He has just finished shooting Steven Spielberg’s untitled Amblin Universal sci-fi film in New York, starring Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson.
O’Connor walk the red carpet at Cannes for the world premiere of Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, an art heist movie where he plays a key role. He managed to take a break from Spielberg’s set to support Reichardt and co-star Paul Mescal, who appears alongside him in Oliver Hermanus’ The History of Sound, based on a novella by Ben Shattuck. O’Connor revealed in an interview that he shot all his scenes for The History of Sound in just two weeks, with Mescal taking the lead role and also serving as producer.
O’Connor is also featured in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery with Daniel Craig and in Max Walker-Silverman’s Rebuilding, which premiered at Sundance. He teased that after finishing Spielberg’s film, he plans a short break in England before heading to Europe for another project with a “pretty famous American” director — later confirmed to be Joel Coen. The exact details remain under wraps, but sources confirm Coen is involved, and filming will take place in Scotland. There are rumors of offers extended to two prominent British actresses for supporting roles, though their identities are unconfirmed. Joel Coen’s last solo directorial effort was The Tragedy of Macbeth, filmed partly in Scotland — perhaps inspiring the setting for Jack of Spades. Meanwhile, Ethan Coen premieres his new film Honey Don't at Cannes’s Grand Théâtre Lumière, continuing their legacy of iconic American cinema.
