Bruce Willis Didn’t Start His Career with Action Movies — And You Won’t Recognize the 'Die Hard' Star in This Film

Still from the film 'Blind Date' (1987)

There are guns here too, but only in hilariously absurd scenes.

Bruce Willis, whose name has been synonymous with high-octane action films for decades, actually began his Hollywood career with… a romantic comedy. In honor of the legendary actor’s 70th birthday, let’s revisit his first leading role in Blind Date.

About a year before Die Hard, Willis played Walter Davis — a dull office worker who ends up on a date with the embodiment of chaos, Nadia (Kim Basinger). She’s beautiful but comes with one major problem: the moment she drinks alcohol, she completely loses control. Walter, despite warnings, decides that a glass of champagne is a great idea. What could possibly go wrong? Everything.

The film starts as a sweet story about an awkward first date but soon escalates into a bar brawl, a car chase, and a mambo dance with a gun in hand. Willis, already known for his role in Moonlighting, plays completely against type here.

His Walter is an insecure guy who spectacularly fails at everything. And it’s in those moments of total chaos that Willis truly shines as a comedic actor. His drunken dance at a party is almost a glimpse of the future John McClane — wild, reckless, but not quite explosive yet.

Kim Basinger, a future Oscar winner, also delivers an unexpected performance. Her Nadia is a mix of beauty and absurdity. Her drunken antics, especially in the restaurant scene, are pure comedy — albeit slightly over-the-top.

Of course, Blind Date is no cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a crucial moment in Willis’ career. It was the first time he proved he could be more than just tough — he could also be funny, awkward, and vulnerable. And who knows? Maybe this experience helped shape him into the action hero we all know. So, if you want to see the future Die Hard star dancing the mambo with a gun in hand — this movie is for you.
