BAFTA Winners Didn’t Surprise — But the Rising Star Deserves Attention: What’s Important to Know About David Jonsson?

The laureate wasn't even portraying a human.

BAFTA winners were mostly expected, nothing out of the ordinary. However, the one to watch is the winner of the "Rising Star" award. This is where the attention should be focused.

Among the BAFTA nominees were Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse in Back to Black, Jharrel Jerome in Unstoppable, Mikey Madison in Anora, Nabhaan Rizwan in In Camera, and David Jonsson as Andy, the 'synthetic human,' in Alien: Romulus.

The winner among the highly competitive nominees was David Jonsson. The British actor has gained international recognition this year for his role as Andy, the 'synthetic human,' in Alien: Romulus. The latest installment of the sci-fi horror franchise follows a group of space colonizers as they confront the most terrifying life form in the universe while scavenging a derelict space station.

David is also known for his performances in Industry and his critically acclaimed film debut Rye Lane. Next up for the actor, who was recently featured on Variety’s 2024 '10 actors to watch' list, are roles in Wasteman, The Long Walk, and Scandalous.

Commenting on his nomination, David Jonsson said: "This is bonkers… Thank you BAFTA, EE, and the wonderful jury for this nomination. As a young boy growing up in East London, I couldn’t think of an honor that’s more about the people, and proof that you can do it too. An absolute blessing and dream. Thank you, truly."
