Miramax is bringing back a beloved ’90s sci-fi horror classic with a remake of The Faculty, the 1998 thriller that blended teenage rebellion, extraterrestrial horror, and conspiracy-fueled suspense. Original director Robert Rodriguez is on board as a producer, with rising filmmaker Drew Hancock writing the script.
Reviving a Cult Favorite
Hancock, whose directorial debut Companion has been receiving critical acclaim, is set to reimagine the eerie high school-set thriller. The project is being developed by BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian and Zach Cregger’s upcoming film Weapons.

The original The Faculty, written by Scream’s Kevin Williamson, followed a group of students who begin to suspect that their teachers and school administrators are hiding a terrifying secret. The film starred Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Usher Raymond, Elijah Wood, and Jon Stewart in a pre-Daily Show role. Despite mixed reviews at the time, it grossed $63.2 million and has since gained a devoted cult following.
Rodriguez and Miramax’s Push for Revivals
Rodriguez, known for El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Sin City, most recently directed Spy Kids: Armageddon for Netflix and the Ben Affleck thriller Hypnotic. His involvement in The Faculty remake signals a return to one of his most memorable genre films.
Under new CEO Jonathan Glickman, Miramax has been actively developing remakes and reboots of its extensive film catalog, which includes Chicago, No Country for Old Men, Scary Movie, and The English Patient. Alongside The Faculty, a Scary Movie reboot is also in the works, set to hit theaters in 2026.

With Rodriguez’s creative oversight and Hancock’s fresh perspective, The Faculty remake has the potential to introduce a new generation to the film’s unique mix of sci-fi horror and teen drama, bringing the paranoia of the original into a modern era.
