Marvel is relaunching the X-Men franchise — but not in the way everyone expected. Ryan Reynolds, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is preparing a new film where his character will be more of a backdrop than a leader. And that's part of the plan.
The project is being developed as a crossover, not a solo film. Three or four well-known characters from the X-Men universe should appear in the film. The names are being kept under wraps for now, but fans are keen to hear Cynthia Erivo's desire to play Storm — she has spoken publicly about this more than once. Perhaps the actress will be given a chance in this film.
Reynolds himself came up with the idea: Deadpool won't be the main character. He will become a kind of catalyst — the driving force of the plot, but not the center of attention. The mercenary with katanas and wall-breaking humor will reveal other heroes and help show them from a new, unexpected side. It's a bold move to step away from a role that has become iconic for the sake of expanding the universe.

The script has not yet been submitted to Marvel Studios. The project is still in its infancy, but Reynolds is unofficially working on the concept. Considering that his intuition has pulled Deadpool out of development hell twice before, we can expect this move to be spot on. A tongue-in-cheek X-Men reboot is just the thing to shake up the tired cinematic universe.
