A Second Life for the Underrated Superhero Film: 'Power Rangers' with Bryan Cranston Finds a New Home

Global Look Press — still from the movie 'Power Rangers' (2017)

This cult favorite will gain a fresh audience.

As the saying goes, "What’s old is new again." This holds true for a film released a few years back, now receiving a second chance to shine.

The 2017 Power Rangers film, featuring Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks, initially received little attention and lacked strong audience feedback. However, it's now making its way to Netflix. The film, which had mixed reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office, had its sequels scrapped. Despite this, over time, it has gained a cult following.

According to What's On Netflix, Power Rangers will be available for streaming on March 6. Directed by Dean Israelite, the film follows a group of diverse teenagers who, after discovering they have unique powers, must join forces to protect Earth from the evil Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks).

Bryan Cranston, known for his iconic role in Breaking Bad, plays Zordon, the original Red Ranger and mentor to the new group of Power Rangers. His character, a wise and powerful entity, helps guide the teenagers as they learn to harness their newfound abilities to battle the reawakened threat of Rita.

The film earned a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus stating,

"Power Rangers lacks the campy charm of its TV roots and the big-budget action of its superhero counterparts, failing to deliver the high-energy morphin' moments fans hoped for."

With a box office gross of $85.4 million domestically and $142.3 million worldwide, against a budget of $100 to $105 million, it's fair to say it didn't quite live up to expectations.
