A Road Movie About Friendship and a Pigeon? Kornél Mundruczó’s 'Place to Be' Assembles an Unexpected Cast

Kornél Mundruczó

Mundruczó’s new film blends humor, heart, and an unusual premise.

Kornél Mundruczó, the Hungarian director known for Pieces of a Woman and White God, is back with a new American project — Place to Be. The film, which has just begun production, brings together an unexpected trio: Taika Waititi, Ellen Burstyn, and Pamela Anderson. Described as a road drama, Place to Be follows an unlikely friendship between an elderly woman and a middle-aged man as they travel from Chicago to New York with an unusual mission — returning a lost racing pigeon home.

A New Collaboration for Mundruczó and Kata Wéber

The screenplay is written by Kata Wéber, Mundruczó’s longtime collaborator who penned some of his most acclaimed films. Their past work together includes Pieces of a Woman, which received high praise for its emotional depth and earned Vanessa Kirby an Academy Award nomination.Mundruczó is currently in post-production on another film, At the Sea, starring Amy Adams, which is expected to debut at a major film festival. With Place to Be now in production, the director is proving to be one of the busiest filmmakers in the indie scene.

The casting of Place to Be has already raised eyebrows, particularly with the inclusion of Pamela Anderson. While she recently made a return to acting with The Last Showgirl, some critics were unimpressed by her performance. Meanwhile, Taika Waititi, best known for his comedic and directing work, takes on an unexpected dramatic role. How this mix of talent will translate on screen remains to be seen.

Kornél Mundruczó: A Director Who Takes Risks

A frequent presence at Cannes, Mundruczó has built a reputation for visually striking and thematically ambitious films. White God showcased his ability to blend genre storytelling with arthouse aesthetics, while Pieces of a Woman demonstrated his knack for emotionally charged narratives. However, not all of his projects have been universally praised — films like Jupiter’s Moon and Tender Son received more mixed reactions.

With Place to Be, Mundruczó is once again stepping into new territory, bringing together an unusual premise, a high-profile but eclectic cast, and his signature cinematic style. Time will tell whether this film becomes another highlight of his career or a polarizing experiment.
