David Fincher has chosen his next feature — and it’s a surprise on several levels. According to multiple sources, the director will reunite with Brad Pitt for a new Netflix project, a sequel to a film Fincher himself did not direct.
Details remain deliberately scarce. The title of the original film hasn’t been disclosed, and speculation is being met with silence. But insiders confirm this unexpected follow-up is now Fincher’s priority, prompting the indefinite pause of his long-developing western Bitterroot.
The film will mark Fincher and Pitt’s fourth collaboration, following Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Pitt is understood to have signed on, making this reunion a notable one, particularly given the unconventional nature of the project.

Fincher’s relationship with Netflix continues to deepen. Having released Mank in 2020 and The Killer in 2023 under his exclusive deal with the streamer, the director has several additional titles in active development. Among them is Squid Game: America, a US reimagining of the South Korean phenomenon, which has gathered momentum in recent weeks. Casting has yet to be announced, though rumours of Leonardo DiCaprio’s involvement have been firmly dismissed.
Also in development is Fincher’s Chinatown prequel series — a project that, like much of his recent work, blends reverence for cinematic history with the director’s meticulous modern eye.
What stands out here, however, is the mystery. A sequel without a publicly named predecessor, helmed by a filmmaker known for tightly authored originals, and backed by a platform willing to let that secrecy breathe — it’s a rare mix. And for now, no one quite knows where it’s headed.
