A new sequel to the beloved 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You is in development! Director Gil Junger, who helmed the original film starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, revealed to PEOPLE that the follow-up, titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is currently in the works alongside original producer Andrew Lazar. While the film hasn't been officially greenlit yet, Junger is co-writing the script with Naya Elle James and envisions it as the first installment of a trilogy, with future films titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.
"10 Things I Hate About Dating is definitively in development," Junger stated, hinting at exciting ideas for the project.
The original film followed Kat Stratford (Stiles), a sharp-witted teen whose life changes when she meets Patrick Verona (Ledger). Celebrated as a quintessential '90s teen comedy, it inspired a TV series and a Broadway musical.
Similar to how the first film adapted Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, this sequel will draw inspiration from Molière's The Misanthrope. Junger expressed interest in bringing back familiar faces from the original cast, particularly Stiles and Larry Miller. He also hopes to honor Ledger's legacy in this new installment.
