A gripping tale of identity and deception takes shape in Kantemir Balagov’s English-language debut.

Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) are in discussions to star in Butterfly Jam, the first English-language film by acclaimed Russian director Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole). This highly anticipated project, which first gained traction at Cannes last year, is set to explore the dynamics of a tight-knit Circassian immigrant community in the U.S. and the intricate, sometimes painful relationship between a father and his son.

A Story of Perception and Reality

Written by Balagov, Butterfly Jam delves into the emotional complexities of a young man who sees his father through a distorted lens, believing him to possess qualities that, in reality, he lacks. The film’s premise has already generated industry buzz, with select distributors showing interest, and UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance co-representing the North American rights.

The film is being financed by AR Content and produced by Alexander Rodnyansky, whose credits include Beanpole, Leviathan, and Loveless. He is joined by Pascal Caucheteux’s Why Not Productions, known for its work on Emilia Pérez. Executive producers include Michael Kupisk (AR Content), Pauline Lamy (Why Not Productions), and Livia Van der Staay (Goodfellas).

Balagov’s Hollywood Journey

This marks Balagov’s second Hollywood endeavor after initially being tapped to direct the pilot of HBO’s The Last of Us. Though he eventually left the project, about 40% of his footage reportedly made it into the final cut, demonstrating his strong visual storytelling. His previous film, Beanpole, was a breakout success at the Cannes Film Festival, earning him the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard section and later making the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.

With a compelling premise and an impressive creative team, Butterfly Jam is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing projects on the horizon. As talks progress and production details emerge, anticipation continues to build for Balagov’s latest cinematic vision.
