A fascinating macabre masterpiece: first reviews of Robert Eggers' “Nosferatu”

The film will be released on December 25.

On December 2, the Berlin Zoo Palast cinema witnessed the world premiere of the Gothic horror film "Nosferatu," directed by the renowned American indie filmmaker Robert Eggers, known for works like "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse”. Eggers crafted the screenplay himself, drawing inspiration from the classic German expressionist film "Nosferatu: Symphony of Horror" (1922). The cast features prominent actors including Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. Critics have largely praised Eggers' fresh take on this iconic story.

Megan Navarro, Bloody Disgusting:

Eggers gives a new interpretation to Murnau's iconic work, creating a psychosexual Gothic tragedy that transforms this adaptation into a mesmerizing macabre masterpiece.

Nicholas Barber, BBC.com:

What really separates Eggers' Nosferatu from the flock is how deeply it explores the images and themes of vampire lore. There aren't many Dracula films that give you so much to sink your teeth into.

Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com:

In terms of technology and logistics, this is an amazing achievement.

Nick Schager, The Daily Beast stated:

A monument to dark desire and the corruption it breeds, and a masterpiece of unholy terror that instantly takes its place alongside the genre’s hallowed greats.

David Ehrlich from IndieWire :

Eggers’ broadly suggestive script doesn’t put too fine a point on the specifics of Ellen’s repression, but Depp’s revelatory performance ensures that the rest of the movie doesn’t have to.

Austin Burke from Flick Fan Nation :

Nosferatu is a fantastical gothic epic that oozes creativity and puts Eggers’ technical craft on full display… If you are looking for a truly immersive horror experience, this is it. Nosferatu is one of the best movies of the year.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Nosferatu currently has 93% positive reviews.
