Still from the movie 'Urban Legend' (1998)

Exploring urban myths through viral trends in a modern horror lens.

The iconic 1998 slasher Urban Legend, starring Jared Leto, is making a comeback with a fresh reboot. Sony Screen Gems has announced a new version of the film, produced by Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter of It (2017). According to the Hollywood Reporter, The reboot is set to explore classic urban legends through the lens of the digital age, where myths and rumors take on new meaning.

The original film follows a series of murders on the fictional Pendleton University campus, each one eerily resembling popular urban legends. The protagonist, Natalie, uncovers a terrifying connection between the murders and these infamous myths, leading her to a chilling discovery. Despite receiving mixed reviews with a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a commercial success, grossing $72.5 million worldwide on a modest $14 million budget.

The upcoming reboot promises a modern take on these familiar tales, adapting them to today’s digital reality. The script is expected to delve deeper into how the digital age has transformed the spread of myths and rumors. While plot details remain under wraps, the project is sparking interest among horror fans and promises to bring the 90s atmosphere back with a contemporary twist.
