At 80 years old, George Miller has seen enough of Hollywood to know that nothing is ever certain. The legendary director recently spoke to Vulture, hinting that another Mad Max film could still happen — if the stars align. However, his next project will not be part of the post-apocalyptic franchise.
Too Many Stories, Too Little Time
"We’ve got another script," Miller revealed. "But having been doing this long enough where I’m habituated to storytelling, I find myself with way too many stories — not only in my head, but in the form of screenplays or at least very detailed notes that are within reach of screenplays."
That means another trip to the Wasteland isn’t entirely off the table, but it’s also not his priority. Miller emphasized that he has two other projects in the works before even considering another Mad Max film.

Furiosa’s Box Office Struggles Changed Everything
The uncertainty comes in the wake of Furiosa’s disappointing box office performance. While the film was well-reviewed and has found an audience on streaming, it only managed to bring in $68 million domestically — far from the kind of success that would have guaranteed another sequel. Had Furiosa been a major hit, Miller would likely have gone straight into production on Mad Max: Wasteland, a long-rumored follow-up starring Tom Hardy.
But even that project remains in limbo. Hardy himself has cast doubt on his return, telling Forbes in June, "I don’t think that’s happening." And while Miller didn’t specify which Mad Max story he has in mind, he had previously hinted at Wasteland as a potential next step — before Furiosa underperformed and plans seemingly shifted.
Will Warner Bros. Take Another Risk?
The biggest challenge, of course, is funding. Would Warner Bros. be willing to invest another $170 million into a franchise that, while beloved, isn’t a guaranteed box office smash? That remains to be seen.

For now, Miller is keeping his options open. "Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place, and some don’t. So all I can say is, we’ll see."
