45% on Rotten Tomatoes? What Went Wrong with Ritchie’s Latest Adventure

Natalie Portman, John Krasinski, Eiza González

Explosions, stars, exotic sets — and still, the magic’s missing.

Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth has splashed onto Apple TV+ screens with a mixed reception, reflected in its lukewarm 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as estranged siblings racing across the globe in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth, promised a thrilling adventure but has left critics divided.

Many have slammed the movie for lacking originality and heart. Ryan Gilbey from The Guardian dismissed it as a "soulless business-class yarn," calling the story derivative and uninspired. Similarly, The Daily Beast went as far as to label it an "Indiana Jones knock-off" that borders on embarrassing, pointing to a weak script and muddled plot. Meanwhile, Film-News.co.uk acknowledged the talented cast but lamented the film’s failure to deliver a compelling narrative, leaving audiences craving more depth.

On the flip side, some critics found redeeming qualities. Keith Loves Movies described it as a "fun but flawed adventure," praising the energetic action sequences and strong performances from Eiza González and Arian Moayed. World of Reel also saw value in Ritchie’s direction, calling the film "a modern adventure" that pays homage to classic treasure hunts despite its shortcomings.

still from Fountain of Youth

In essence, Fountain of Youth dazzles with high production values and star power but struggles to ignite excitement in many critics, making it a divisive entry in Guy Ritchie’s filmography. Fans of light, escapist fare might find it enjoyable, but those craving originality and depth may be left wanting.
