Fresh off the premiere of their latest Netflix film, The Electric State, Joe and Anthony Russo have teased what’s next on their agenda: two highly anticipated new entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
A Bold New Direction for the Avengers
Having previously helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers are set to return to the MCU for these next major installments. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Russo revealed that the upcoming films will take the franchise in an unexpected direction.
"I think these movies are going to be a surprise to people — we found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us but we think very radical, and I think it’s going to challenge audiences."

One of the biggest surprises is the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, marking his return to Marvel in a completely new role. While the franchise is known for reinvention, this casting choice is bound to stir excitement and speculation among fans.
The Electric State and Expanding Horizons
Before they dive fully into the world of Marvel again, the Russos are focusing on The Electric State, a sci-fi adventure based on Simon Stålenhag’s novel. The film follows an orphaned teenager, played by Millie Bobby Brown, as she embarks on a journey across a futuristic America, accompanied by a mysterious robot and a drifter played by Chris Pratt.
Joe Russo described the movie as a story deeply rooted in human connection despite its technological backdrop. "I think it’s about being kind and staying connected to each other on a human level and not losing ourselves in technology." Anthony Russo added that, while they don’t have an immediate follow-up planned, they envision The Electric State as a potential franchise, with a game and possibly a series in development. "The world was designed to be explored, and hopefully we’ll get to explore it."

Millie Bobby Brown and a Potential MCU Future
Brown, who has already worked closely with the Russos on The Electric State, didn’t dismiss the idea of joining the MCU herself. “I never say no until I read a script,” she teased. She also reminisced about visiting the set of Avengers: Endgame, saying, "It was such a wonderful experience. I remember thinking, 'Oh my gosh, I really want to be directed by them.' That was kind of the kickoff to figuring out how we could work together in the future."
With The Electric State set to debut on Netflix on March 14, and the Russo Brothers gearing up for their next Avengers films, the coming years promise to be an exciting time for fans of both sci-fi and superhero cinema.
