A perfect choice for a date night.

Valentine's Day brings a special romantic atmosphere that influences not only relationships but also movie choices. Many couples mark the occasion with heartfelt films rather than light romantic comedies. One film, boasting a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, stands out as a must-see melodrama.

The Plot of Before Sunrise

Before Sunrise tells the story of an American who finds himself in Vienna during a layover. On the same train is a young Frenchwoman heading to Paris for her studies. They meet during the journey, and the man persuades her to step off the train and spend an evening and night exploring the city together.

The events of the film unfold over just a few hours. At dawn, the two part ways, knowing they must continue their separate paths. They agree to meet at the same spot in six months.

Facts About Before Sunrise

Directed by Richard Linklater, Before Sunrise premiered in 1995, with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the lead roles. The story of their characters did continue — but not after six months. Instead, it resumed nine years later in the 2004 sequel, Before Sunset.

The trilogy concluded with a third film, Before Midnight, released in 2013. This installment portrayed the couple confronting the realities and struggles of married life.

Audience Reviews of Before Sunrise

Despite the trilogy’s success, it is the first film that remains most beloved. Viewers praised it for its performances and unique, intimate atmosphere.

"I couldn’t look away — it’s such a deeply atmospheric film that instantly evokes nostalgia for youth, when one day feels like a lifetime." "The best performance of Ethan Hawke’s career."
