It seems fans may get a chance to see their beloved Gimli on screen again. John Rhys-Davies, who had previously categorically refused to return to the role due to the exhausting makeup process, has now softened his stance.
Just a year ago, he stated that his age wouldn't allow him to transform into a dwarf again — with heavy prosthetics and long hours in the makeup chair. But now, with the advancement of technology, the situation has changed. New developments may reduce prep time to just one hour.
"If I’m asked to serve, I will consider it and probably say yes," the actor said in a recent interview with ScreenRant.

The new film The Hunt for Gollum will be released on December 17, 2027 — the date was moved from 2026. Andy Serkis will not only play the lead role but also direct. Peter Jackson and other creators of the iconic trilogy have joined the project.
Liv Tyler wants to return as the elven Arwen, and Orlando Bloom is open to reprising his role as Legolas. Viggo Mortensen and Ian McKellen have also not ruled out their participation. It looks like fans may be in for a true Lord of the Rings star reunion.
