'Shrek 5' Theory: The Return will Finally Answer Fans' Biggest Question

Still from the animated movie 'Shrek'

The story still lacks a proper conclusion.

Animated studios are increasingly revisiting iconic franchises, and Shrek is no exception. After 16 years since the release of the fourth film, Shrek 5 is set to hit theatres in 2026. While little is known about the plot, the teaser has sparked numerous theories. The most popular suggests the film will delve into Shrek’s past and introduce his parents.

The Shrek 5 teaser hints at a family story

Although the first teaser lasts only 30 seconds and reveals little about the plot, it hints at the theme of the new film. In the trailer, Shrek and Donkey ask the Magic Mirror the usual question of who is the fairest of them all. The Mirror shows a montage of memes with Shrek, and then Fiona and their grown-up daughter, Felicia, appear.

This focus on Felicia has led many to believe that the story will centre around Shrek’s family. In previous films, parenting was explored, but it always remained secondary. In the third film, Shrek learns he’s going to be a father, and in the fourth, his desire for a break from family life leads to a series of adventures. Now, family values are likely to be at the forefront of the story.

Will Shrek’s father return?

One popular theory suggests that Shrek’s parents will appear in the fifth film. Fans speculate the story will explore Shrek’s complex relationship with his father, who might have held strict views on ogre upbringing and nature. In one of the films, Shrek mentioned that his father tried to eat him, hinting at a difficult family dynamic. His parents could be portrayed as the typical ogres — rude, reclusive, and disdainful of humans. Upon seeing how much their son has changed, they may not approve of his gentler, friendlier nature.

The conflict could intensify if Shrek’s children begin to sympathise with their conservative grandparents, questioning what makes a true ogre. This could present a significant challenge for Shrek, who would need to defend his values and protect his family.

What happened to the other ogres?

One of the biggest mysteries in the Shrek franchise is the fate of other ogres. In the early films, Shrek was the only ogre, and Fiona was initially human. However, in the alternate reality shown in Shrek Forever After, there was an entire ogre community.

This raises many questions: Why did the ogres disappear in the main timeline? Could a catastrophe have occurred in the past that left Shrek as the last of his kind, or are they simply hiding? Shrek 5 may provide answers, especially if Shrek’s parents play a significant role in the story.

Will Shrek 5 be a worthy conclusion?

Shrek Forever After was marketed as the conclusion to the story, but its ending left many questions unanswered. The fourth film showed Shrek realising the importance of family but didn’t delve into his past or provide clarity on the fate of other ogres.

The fifth film has the potential to provide closure, telling the story of Shrek’s origins and his roots. It could be more than just another sequel; it may serve as an emotional final chapter, completing Shrek’s character arc.
