Johnny Depp steps into the opulent shoes of King Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry, in his first major French-speaking role.
Directed by and co-starring Maïwenn, the film tells the true story of Jeanne Bécu, a woman of humble birth who ascended to become the king’s last official mistress — a climb both seductive and scandalous. The drama had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where it opened the event to much buzz, both artistic and tabloid.
Shot on 35mm film and largely on location at Versailles, the production is visually lavish, with period details reminiscent of Barry Lyndon. For added authenticity, the crew had special permission to film inside the Château de Versailles — a rare feat. Depp, playing Louis XV in French, took on the role after a period of professional hiatus, marking a bold return to international cinema. Meanwhile, Maïwenn plays Jeanne from her youth, with younger versions of the character portrayed by rising French talent.

Jeanne Bécu, born in 1743, was never meant to belong at court. But her wit, beauty, and defiance challenged aristocratic norms — and ultimately shook Versailles. As historical dramas go, Jeanne du Barry may not rewrite the genre, but it certainly reminds us that history often belongs to those bold enough to break its rules. .
