What makes a Marvel film truly great — worthy of being ranked above all the rest? It has to be surprising. Unlike anything that came before it. A film where superheroes don’t just save the world, but break stereotypes, inspire, provoke thought, and leave behind not just action, but meaning. And that’s exactly the kind of film that landed first place in IndieWire’s ranking of the best Marvel movies. And no, it’s not another Avengers instalment.
Topping the list is Black Panther (2018). A story not only about the prince of Wakanda, but about generational conflict, the cost of power, and national identity. Ryan Coogler’s film became the first superhero blockbuster to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its soundtrack, visuals, and message turned it into a cultural event — far beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Interestingly, the films that follow in the ranking are also the ones that challenged the formula or offered deeper takes on their characters. Second place goes to Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) — praised for its restrained tone and genuine drama in the story of Steve Rogers. Then comes Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of an entire era. After that, The Winter Soldier, a thriller about trust, betrayal, and truth.

Rounding out the top five is Thor: Ragnarok, where director Taika Waititi reinvented the Norse god and turned the film into a psychedelic comic book movie. In sixth place: Spider-Man: Homecoming, where Peter Parker finally became a real teenager, not just a superhero in tights.
Seventh is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — a blend of martial arts, family drama, and fantasy. Eighth and ninth place go to The Avengers and Thor, the gateway films for many fans’ love of the MCU. And closing out the top ten is Iron Man — the one that started it all.
