Jason Momoa has confirmed he’ll return as Duncan Idaho in Dune 3, the upcoming adaptation of Dune: Messiah from director Denis Villeneuve.
Speaking on TODAY with Craig Melvin, Momoa said: "I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby."
The news raises questions, since Duncan dies in the first Dune film (2021), sacrificing himself to save Paul and Lady Jessica. But fans of Frank Herbert’s books know the character is later resurrected as a clone — a storyline that could now make its way to the screen.

Asked if his return would follow that path, Momoa responded playfully:
"I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like Game of Thrones, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be … I’m going to be coming back."
Although Warner Bros. has not commented, Legendary confirmed in April 2024 that Dune 3 is in development, following the success of Dune: Part Two, which earned $711 million globally.
Director Denis Villeneuve has emphasized that Dune: Messiah will stand apart stylistically. "For me, it was really a diptych," he said of the first two films. "If I do a third one... it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity."

With Momoa back and Villeneuve looking to evolve the story, Dune 3 is shaping up to be a bold next step in the saga.
