'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Sequel : Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Get Back The Lead Roles

Sony Pictures is set to release the sequel in theaters on July 18, 2025.

Remember Jennifer Love Hewitt? She was a major star for a brief period in the late '90s and early 2000s, appearing in teen favorites like Can’t Hardly Wait and the TV series Party of Five.

One of Hewitt’s most notable successes was the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel. Now, Sony has decided to bring her back alongside co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. for the latest installment of the franchise, which is being written by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson (via Deadline).

The previously announced cast includes Prinze Jr., Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. While plot details for this new installment remain under wraps, the sequel is rumored to be titled I’ll Never Forget What You Did Last Summer.

The original film followed four young friends (Prinze Jr., Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe) who, connected by a tragic accident, are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding killer in their small town.

So why make a sequel to a franchise that has mostly produced lackluster films? The answer is simple: nostalgia sells. Millennials who grew up with the "I Know What You Did" movies are a key audience. However, the franchise's appeal has waned over the years, with the third installment, released in 2006, receiving little attention and going straight to DVD.
