Lionsgate has announced the release date for the suspense thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, marking the feature film debut of pop star The Weeknd, set for May 16, 2025, in North America. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the film is described as a “musically driven psychological thriller,” produced by The Weeknd — whose real name is Abel Tesfaye — through his indie label Manic Phase. Shults is known for his work on the coming-of-age film Waves and the psychological horror It Comes At Night, both for A24.
The film stars The Weeknd alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan and is inspired by the pop star's upcoming album and tour of the same name. The Hurry Up Tomorrow album released on January 24, 2025, and represents the final chapter in a trilogy following After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022). Coinciding with the album, The Weeknd performed a one-night-only concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on January 25, 2025.
The artist recently made history by being the first to have 24 songs each surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify. He boasts seven No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including chart-toppers like "Blinding Lights" and "Starboy," and has won four Grammys, despite boycotting the awards since 2021.
Beyond his music career, The Weeknd co-created and starred in HBO's The Idol alongside Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. He has also ventured into voice acting in a 2020 episode of American Dad and appeared in Uncut Gems.
The production team for Hurry Up Tomorrow includes Reza Fahim, the late Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss, with executive producers such as Jenna Ortega, Trey Edward Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, and Harrison Huffman involved in the project.
