The action-thriller Carry-On has made its way into Netflix’s top-five most-viewed English-language films, drawing viewers with its explosive plot and nostalgic nod to classic action cinema.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the film has amassed 149.5 million views within its first month, joining hits like Red Notice and Bird Box. Reflecting on the success, Collet-Serra noted that the film’s connection with audiences mattered most to him. "It’s seeing people’s reactions… I started getting texts from friends who didn’t know I directed it, saying they loved it," he shared.
The plot follows Taron Egerton as a TSA agent forced to allow dangerous cargo onto a plane under threat from Jason Bateman’s enigmatic villain. The cast includes Sofia Carson as Egerton’s pregnant fiancée and Danielle Deadwyler as detective Elena Cole, whose character sparked fan discussions about potential spin-offs.

Despite the film’s success, both Collet-Serra and producer Dylan Clark emphasized that a sequel isn’t in active development. "There are no plans," said Collet-Serra, "but if we had an idea that lived up to the original, maybe we’d consider it." Clark added that brainstorming ideas is part of the fun, noting, "These characters are great. You can imagine stories centering on someone like Elena Cole."
Netflix’s film chairman, Dan Lin, praised the movie as a tribute to the action-packed films of the ’80s and ’90s, saying, "Audiences are loving it, and I’m thrilled it’s one of Netflix’s most popular films ever."
Egerton, reflecting on the possibility of a follow-up, said, "I think it turned out great, and I’m open to anything… You say sequel, and my tail pricks up."
With Carry-On delivering a mix of suspense and nostalgia, fans are eager to see if its top-tier performance on Netflix will lead to more thrilling stories in the future.
