No day goes by without controversy. Ahead of the release of the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie, the film's lead, made a controversial comment about the movie, which led to criticism.
During the film's press tour in Rome on Monday, Mackie told the live audience that Captain America should embody positivity for the entire world, emphasizing that "America" isn't the most important part of the name.
"It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable."
His comments sparked anger among right-wing social media users, and he started receiving online criticism.
Later, the actor had to clarify his remark in an Instagram post. He stated that the hero’s admirable qualities aren’t limited to one country, adding,
"I'm a proud American, and taking on Cap’s shield is an honor. I respect those who serve our country. Cap’s qualities are universal and relatable worldwide."
However, according to the film's director, Julius Onah, the audience misunderstood the actor's words.In an interview with Vanity Fair, Julius Onah responded to Anthony Mackie's comments on Captain America. The director thinks the controversy, fueled by right-wing supporters, is a misunderstanding of Mackie's words.
"Speaking for myself, I approached this film with a very specific point of view…the sense of community, which is something I personally have experienced in various ways while living in the U.S."
Onah also said that the issue with the controversial remark is resolved and Sam Wilson remains their Capitan America.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled for release in the United States on February 14, 2025. This film will be part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
