'A New Original Event Film': Steven Spielberg’s Mysterious 2026 Project Gets a Summer Release Date

A blockbuster return for Spielberg with an all-star cast.

Steven Spielberg’s next film has officially landed a release date, shifting from May 15 to June 12, 2026. The yet-to-be-titled project, described as a "new original event film," now avoids direct competition with major releases like Avengers: Doomsday (May 1) and The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 22). Instead, it will now share its debut weekend with Paramount’s Scary Movie reboot and premiere just one week before Disney’s Toy Story 5.

An All-Star Cast and a Return to Spectacle

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson. Though plot details remain under wraps, reports suggest that Spielberg’s latest venture is UFO-related, marking a thrilling return to the kind of big-screen spectacle that defined much of his career.

Veteran screenwriter David Koepp, a longtime Spielberg collaborator known for Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is penning the screenplay. This project will be Spielberg’s first major blockbuster since West Side Story and the semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans.

A Strategic Calendar Shift

Alongside Spielberg’s new release date, Universal has also removed the upcoming film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert from the 2026 schedule. The untitled project had yet to announce its script, title, or cast, and the studio is expected to reveal a new release date in the future.

With Spielberg back at the helm of a large-scale, original blockbuster, expectations are high for what could be another defining moment in his legendary career.
