Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return as Jim in the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, set for release on January 16, 2026. While he won’t appear in the first new film, 28 Years Later (premiering June 20, 2025), Murphy’s character — who survived the original 2002 outbreak—will play a key role in the second movie.
Director Danny Boyle confirmed Murphy’s involvement and noted his return helped secure studio approval. Murphy is also an executive producer on the project. Fans can look forward to seeing Jim’s story continue after 28 Weeks Later, where he was absent. The new trilogy introduces a new cast and storyline set on a remote island. Production for The Bone Temple is underway, with Murphy’s role expected to expand the original narrative.
