Why the Fremen Leave No Trace and Don’t Fear Giant Worms: The Secret of Sandwalking in 'Dune'

One wrong step could be fatal.

In Dune, the characters walk across the endless desert of Arrakis, where giant worms can burst from the ground at any moment. But why don’t the Fremen, who live side by side with these creatures, become their prey? The answer lies in a special movement technique — sandwalking.

The key is to move in an unpredictable pattern. Worms detect rhythmic vibrations on the surface — footsteps, running, the tread of machinery. Sandwalking, however, is chaotic. The Fremen slow down, then suddenly take a few steps, then pause or move in zigzags. This confuses the worm — it can’t lock onto a clear source of sound.

The Fremen are trained in this from childhood, because even a single wrong step could be deadly. They even try to muffle the sound of their clothing. Sandwalking is an art form, blending camouflage and survival into every step.
