Who were The Stone Giants in 'The Hobbit' — Real or Just Bilbo’s Hallucinations?

Martin Freeman

Tolkien dropped hints about the origins of these giants in his books.

The stone giants that appear in The Hobbit remain one of Middle-earth’s most shadowy and unresolved mysteries. They arrive — and then vanish. Peter Jackson portrayed them as towering mountain titans, their skin made of rocks and bones of jagged stone. But what did Tolkien himself say? And who were these mysterious giants really?

In the book, the scene with the giants is brief but memorable: the dwarves and Bilbo, caught in the mountains, watch these colossal beings hurling boulders at each other during a storm. They roar, laugh, and seem to play — but create such chaos around them that survival nearby is nearly impossible. After this, there is no further mention — as if they never existed at all. Yet, if you look closer at Tolkien’s other works, traces do appear.

First, Gandalf speaks seriously about the giants to Beorn — treating them as real creatures. Since Gandalf believes in them, and Beorn’s reaction confirms it, they are not just Bilbo’s imagination. Gandalf later even remarks that "he could use a proper giant now to block the way" — without irony. This suggests giants do exist and could potentially be allies.

Still from The Hobbit

According to Tolkien’s drafts, especially in The Book of Lost Tales, the giants were types of spirits — Ulbandi (forest) and Taulír (mountain) — who originally served Melkor. There are also mentions of two mighty giants — Nán and Gilím — referenced in Lúthien’s spell. This implies Tolkien envisioned them not as mere monsters but as something much older and more complex.

Interestingly, legends of giants have also seeped into Gondor’s culture. In the Belfalas valley lies a place called Sheyá Tarlang, where legend says a giant named Tarlang once stumbled and broke his neck, and his remains became part of the mountain landscape. The stones he carried became known as Kul Bin (small burden) and Kul Veleg (great burden). While this might be folklore, Minas Tirith itself is described as "so ancient, it seemed carved from the bones of the earth’s giants." Coincidence?

Fans debate: were the giants a type of troll? Annotations on The Hobbit suggest this — that they were just a wild, primitive kind of troll. But in drafts of The Return of the Shadow, Tolkien described them as the "Great Folk" — giant humans, not stupid but full of strength and even magic.

Still from The Hobbit

Who were they, then? An ancient race created before the elves? A forgotten branch of the Maiar? Or beings like ents, but shaped from mountains instead of trees? Tolkien never gave a definitive answer. Nor did he close the subject. So maybe, somewhere beyond the mountains, on untrodden paths, the giants still watch the world from afar. Middle-earth loves its mysteries — and perhaps the stone giants were one of its deepest secrets.
