If in the first part of Inside Out Riley's emotions controlled her mood, like DJs at a school disco, then in Inside Out 2 they go to a much darker and stranger place, to the safe of special memories. It is there that the girl's darkest secret is hidden under lock and key. And this place looks as if all the fears of adolescence have fled there, wrapped in dusty blankets.
Curiosity is a terrible force, especially for Joy. She cannot resist and tries to find out from the mysterious guardian - the Deep Dark Secret - what Riley is hiding. The character, with a conspiratorial look, first hesitates, as if he is afraid of scaring himself, and then still reveals the secret: it turns out that Riley once burned a hole in the carpet. That's all! No Hitchcock-style nightmares.
Joy sighs with relief, in her imagination the secret was much more terrible. She was sure it was a far more shameful episode: when Riley peed in the pool as a child. Joy crosses herself and smiles, and Deep Dark Secret quickly slams the door to her safe, as if hiding the last of Riley's vulnerability from prying eyes.
