‘We Have Angels Along the Way’: How a Star Came to Justin Lin’s Rescue

Still from the film 'Star Trek Beyond', Justin Lin

It's well known that this celebrity has a knack for making igenerous moves when it matters most.

The director of Fast and Furious owes a great deal to Keanu Reeves for his timely intervention and support at the last moment. As always, the actor displayed his signature kindness, stepping in to help when it was most needed.

Speaking with The Wrap during the Sundance festivities, Justin Lin shared that Last Days would not have come to fruition if not for Keanu Reeves. After the film's funding fell through — a familiar challenge in indie filmmaking — it looked like the project might be dead in the water. But Keanu, without any intention of taking a producer’s role, stepped in simply because he wanted to lend a hand and ensure the movie got made.

It was this one moment where everything fell apart. I think with all independent experiences you just don't know. It's a roller coaster. At that point, I thought it was all going to be done. We have angels along the way that come and really help us. In this case, I got a call from Keanu Reeves who heard that we were having some problems and he said, Look, I want to help and it was really inspiring.

After nearly two decades of directing major blockbusters, including four Fast & Furious films and Star Trek Beyond in 2016, Justin Lin returns to the indie film scene with his latest project. This biographical drama focuses on the tragic story of John Allen Chau, a young missionary whose attempt to reach out to a secluded tribe on an island in the Indian Ocean set off a chain of dramatic events.
