Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have announced a theatrical release date of December 17, 2027, for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Currently, Disney has an untitled Star Wars film listed on that same date, but it is likely an outdated entry in the system. Notably, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, featuring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled for May 28, 2027. Universal has also reserved December 22, 2027, for an untitled project.
The upcoming film will be produced by the Oscar-winning team behind the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies — Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — alongside producer Zane Weiner. Walsh and Boyens are collaborating on the screenplay with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

The announcement follows Warner Bros Discovery's positive Q1 results, which showed growth in streaming subscribers and profits. The entire Lord of the Rings and Hobbit live-action films have collectively grossed over 5.9 billion for Warner Bros /NewLine. Despite an attempt to expand the franchise into anime with The Lord of the Rings:The War of the Rohirrim, which earned only 20.6 million worldwide, excitement remains high for this new venture into Tolkien's world.
