Move over, Krypton — James Gunn’s biggest inspiration for Superman isn’t another DC property or even the mighty Man of Steel. It’s Godzilla Minus One. Yes, really.
While speaking to Japan’s Cinema Today, Gunn revealed that Takashi Yamazaki’s 2023 kaiju masterwork shaped his approach to the upcoming DC film. But it wasn’t the monster mayhem that impressed him—it was the emotional core.
"My goal is to make a film that depicts Godzilla like Godzilla Minus One, but also has a great human drama," he explained.

Gunn’s Superman may include "giant monsters, robots, flying dogs, other superheroes"— Krypto fans, rejoice — but it’s the human relationships that truly matter. At the heart of it all? The complex triangle between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor.
Gunn also cited Ultraman as a major influence on his career, not just this film. So while the cape and lasers will still be there, expect something deeper — something with soul. If Godzilla Minus One taught us anything, it’s that the people matter just as much as the creature. And Gunn seems determined to prove the same for Superman.
