This 'Game of Thrones' Hero Got What He Wanted Without a Sword — But Why Was He Derisively Called 'Littlefinger'?

Still from the series 'Game of Thrones'

The nickname "Littlefinger" had its own story.

In Game of Thrones, many prominent characters moved the plot forward. However, special attention should be given to those who mastered the art of behind-the-scenes maneuvering. It was these characters who were responsible for the sharp twists in the story, not those in the spotlight.

A typical "grey cardinal" in the series was Petyr Baelish. He never had to draw a sword to bring his plans to life and convince his rivals. He was considered one of the most dangerous people in Westeros. However, despite his influence, the character was often mocked by the nickname "Littlefinger," and it wasn’t without reason.

Petyr Baelish's Story

This character was unparalleled in his ability to gain the trust of everyone he encountered. He offered his knowledge and assistance in political intrigues, promising to help others reach their coveted thrones.

Baelish was not in need of money. Not only was he the Master of Coin, but he also owned several very profitable establishments. For someone from a little-known noble family with only lands on rocky peninsulas as an inheritance, this was an incredible stroke of luck.

Why Was Baelish Called "Littlefinger"?

The Baelish family held lands in the northeast of the Vale of Arryn, often referred to as the Fingers. However, Petyr spent his childhood in Riverrun, where Lord Hoster Tully agreed to raise him. He grew up alongside Catelyn, her sister Lysa, and her brother Edmure.

Baelish's relationship with his foster family was strained. He harbored unrequited love for Catelyn, who ignored him, and Edmure constantly teased him. It was Edmure who coined the nickname "Littlefinger," referencing Petyr's origins from the Fingers, as well as his short stature and slender build.
