John Cena’s bold, R-rated DC superhero has returned in the first trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, created by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. The new season takes place within the rebooted DC Universe, which kicked off with Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos and continues with his upcoming summer blockbuster Superman. The trailer features cameos from Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, both set to appear in Superman.
The original Peacemaker debuted in 2022 on Max (formerly HBO Max) as a spin-off of Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The series stars Cena as Christopher Smith, a patriotic mercenary working for A.R.G.U.S., the secret organization dedicated to fighting superhuman threats. In Season 1, he investigated Project Butterfly, battling parasitic aliens that take over human minds worldwide.
The cast includes Danielle Brooks (daughter of Amanda Waller), Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland as A.R.G.U.S. agents, Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s racist father August “Auggie” Smith aka White Dragon, Sol Rodriguez, Tim Meadows, and Eagly — the beloved bird sidekick. Frank Grillo returns as Rick Flag Sr., after voicing him in Creature Commandos. With Peacemaker having killed Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman, some unresolved tension is expected.
Peacemaker Season 2 premieres on Max on August 21, featuring eight episodes.
