It's impossible to escape the comparisons.

The new Paddington sequel has received mixed reviews from critics. It seems the film is unlikely to replicate the original's past success.

Paddington in Peru tells the continuation of the the well-known furry bear's story, who travels to Peru, the country of his origins, to visit his Aunt Lucy. Along the way, he finds himself in a series of exciting and heartwarming adventures as he reconnects with his roots, while also encountering new friends and challenges.

TheWrap's William Bibbiani says unfortunately the sequel “stinks”.

“Ordinarily, the idea of making a sequel to one of the best movies ever made would be a little anxiety-inducing, since how could lightning possibly strike twice? But “Paddington 2” is “Paddington 2.” There’s literally a “2” in the title. This “Peru” adventure is a sequel to a great movie that people not only liked more than the original, but is now one of the most celebrated movies of all-time. If any threequel could live up to its predecessors, or at least do them justice, surely it would be Paddington in Peru, Bibbiani writes, adding that “The new film has some heart, but it’s buried beneath a lot of hackneyed writing and tedious padding. Like, a ton of padding. A padding ton.”

However, there were also positive reviews from critics, who praised the movie. The Hollywood Reporter's Leslie Felperin says it has no disgrace, adding. “It has many charming elements and qualities, including spectacular scenery, a child-friendly adventure story and Olivia Colman as a manically grinning, occasionally singing, nun”.

Overall, Paddington in Peru has received a solid rating, with a respectable 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, it didn’t reach the heights of its predecessors-Paddington (99%) and Paddington 2 (97%), but it still holds up well compared to other recent productions."
