Pixar has officially confirmed that Coco 2 is in development, with the beloved creative team returning to expand the story that touched hearts around the world. The news was shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, where he revealed that the sequel is in early production and will be released theatrically in 2029.
Fans of the 2017 original can rejoice knowing that director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina are both back to helm the project. Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) will produce the sequel. "While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure," Iger said. "We can’t wait to share more soon."
Coco followed a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who, in pursuit of his dream to become a musician, finds himself in the Land of the Dead. On his extraordinary journey, he uncovers family secrets, meets his ancestors, and learns the importance of heritage and memory. The film was both a critical and commercial triumph, earning two Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for 'Remember Me', written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. It also won a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and multiple Critics’ Choice Awards.

In addition to the new film, Disney is planning a themed ride based on Coco for its California Adventure park — further proof that the world of Coco is far from fading.
While few plot details have been revealed about Coco 2, the announcement alone is enough to spark excitement among fans. With the original filmmakers on board and Pixar’s signature emotional storytelling, this sequel promises another vibrant journey into music, memory, and the magic of family — even if we’ll have to wait a while to see it.
