In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter after being named the outlet’s Producer of the Year for 2024, Reynolds was asked about the future of Deadpool following the box office-breaking success of Deadpool 3 earlier this year. Though tight-lipped about the Merc with a Mouth’s MCU future ("I have some pitches and ideas, but none of them center on Deadpool," Reynolds said), he was more candid when it came to Boy Band—a movie exploring the aftermath of fame in youth. Reynolds and Jackman are set to star as former boy band members reuniting in middle age.
A Long-Gestating Project
The film, which falls under Reynolds’ Maximum Effort production banner through a first-look deal with Paramount, is moving closer to reality. "I’m on a second draft," Reynolds revealed. "The first draft was incredible and written by one of my favorite writers, Jesse Andrews (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl). Now I’m working on it alone." While no production schedule or filming dates have been confirmed, Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy are actively exploring how to make the film a reality.
"Shawn, Hugh, and I are open to creative ways to make this movie at an absolute bargain," Reynolds said. He described the film’s themes: "A lot of boy band members had managers who left them high and dry. They experienced fame that’s difficult for anyone to handle, let alone adolescents. Farming out your self-worth to an audience of screaming fans creates arrested cultural development. This movie would focus on people in their 40s and 50s trying to rebuild their lives."
