Steven Soderbergh’s Presence offers a ghost story unlike any other, with its entire narrative shot from the perspective of a spirit haunting a family. The film’s climactic ending reveals not only the ghost’s identity but its heart-wrenching purpose, leaving audiences both stunned and deeply moved.
The Family's Struggles and the Spirit’s Role
The story begins with Chloe (Callina Liang), a teenager mourning the loss of her best friend Nadia, who reportedly died from a drug overdose. Chloe and her family move into a new home for a fresh start, but she quickly realizes that they are not alone — the house is haunted by an unknown presence.
While Chloe senses the spirit early on, her parents, Rebecca (Lucy Liu) and Chris (Chris Sullivan), are too consumed by their own problems, including Rebecca’s mysterious legal troubles, to take her seriously. Chloe’s brother Tyler (Eddy Maday) dismisses her concerns as well, until a poltergeist incident makes the entire family confront the reality of their haunting.
The Medium’s Insights

In an attempt to understand the spirit, the family invites a medium named Lisa (Natalie Woolams-Torres). Lisa senses the spirit’s confusion and pain, noting that it doesn’t fully understand its purpose or even its place in time. She also identifies an old mirror in the house as a significant object, explaining that such items can hold powerful energy and memories.
A Deadly Confrontation
The film’s climax takes a dark turn when Tyler invites his dangerous friend Ryan (West Mulholland) into their home. Ryan drugs both Tyler and Chloe, revealing his true nature as he tries to harm Chloe in the same way he previously murdered Nadia. Despite the spirit’s efforts to intervene, it is unable to stop Ryan.
In a desperate moment, Tyler regains consciousness and rushes to save his sister. He shoves Ryan, and the two fall through a window to their deaths, sacrificing himself to protect Chloe.
The Spirit’s Identity Revealed

In the film’s emotional final moments, Rebecca, while preparing to leave the house, finally senses the spirit’s presence. Following it to the old mirror, she sees her son Tyler’s reflection and realizes the truth: the ghost that had been protecting Chloe all along was Tyler, who returned to save her from Ryan. Overwhelmed with grief, Rebecca tearfully exclaims, "He came back to save her!"
A Haunting That Resonates
Presence combines its supernatural elements with raw family drama, delivering a story about love, sacrifice, and redemption. Its unique perspective and gut-wrenching ending make it a standout in the horror genre, leaving viewers reflecting on its themes long after the credits roll.
