Nic Pizzolatto, best known as the creator of True Detective, has completed production on his latest project — a character-driven indie film titled Easy’s Waltz. Starring Vince Vaughn, Michelle Monaghan, and Al Pacino, the film is now in postproduction but reportedly facing creative tension behind the scenes.
The film follows a struggling comedian-crooner navigating modern-day Las Vegas, his self-destructive brothers, and a cast of old-school Vegas personalities. Pizzolatto both wrote and directed the feature, with Margot Hand producing.
According to several sources, the edit has become a point of contention between Pizzolatto and the film’s producers. Reports suggest a disagreement over the film’s tone and direction, with producers reportedly pushing for a more 'audience-friendly' cut, while Pizzolatto is said to be advocating for his original creative vision.

The filmmaker appeared to allude to the situation on social media, replying to a fan who asked about the project’s status: "The contest of 'vastly different edits' goes to the financiers." The comment has been widely interpreted as confirmation of an ongoing dispute regarding final cut privileges.
Easy’s Waltz is Pizzolatto’s first major project since his script for Marvel’s Blade was shelved. While the editing process may be turbulent, interest in the film remains high thanks to its ensemble cast and Pizzolatto’s distinctive voice as a storyteller.
As postproduction continues, the future of Easy’s Waltz — and the version that ultimately reaches audiences — remains to be seen.
