David Lynch was in the process of creating a limited series for Netflix before his death, according to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Sarandos praised Lynch’s visionary work and shared details about the unproduced project.
"David Lynch came into Netflix to pitch a limited series, which we jumped at," Sarandos wrote. "It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks, but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius."
Sarandos cited the pandemic and Lynch’s health issues as reasons the project stalled, adding, "We made it clear that as soon as he was able, we were all in." He described Lynch’s work as "remarkable, visionary, bold, and artful" and admitted he will "always wonder about what he had in mind for us with what would have been his last project."

What Was the Mysterious Series?
In 2019, rumors swirled about a Lynch-led Netflix series with the working title Wisteria. Lynch veterans Naomi Watts and Laura Dern were spotted at Netflix headquarters, fueling speculation. Reports indicated the project was greenlit for 13 hour-long episodes with an $85 million budget. Lynch was set to write and direct every episode, collaborating with his long-time cinematographer Peter Deming (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive).
Later updates revealed the official title to be Unrecorded Night. According to producer Sabrina Sutherland, the series was unrelated to Twin Peaks and had been in pre-production before the pandemic disrupted plans.

Was the Project Canceled or Shelved?
Sarandos’ tribute has raised questions about the series’ true status. While he implies the project was paused due to external circumstances, some reports suggest Netflix canceled it outright. Sutherland stated during a Q&A that Unrecorded Night was "close to shooting" but was ultimately abandoned.
Adding to the confusion, Lynch himself recently admitted that Netflix had rejected his pitch for an animated series called Snootworld. This has led some fans to wonder if Sarandos is attempting to rewrite history about Netflix’s commitment to Lynch’s work.

A Legacy of Mystery
Whether Unrecorded Night could still be revived remains unclear, but Lynch’s legacy as a groundbreaking filmmaker endures. As Sarandos eloquently put it: "David Lynch was an unapologetic genius. He didn’t want you to understand his work… It was part of the ride together."
For now, fans are left to imagine what Lynch’s final creative vision might have been, a fitting end for an artist who always thrived on mystery.
